FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Did you know that the City of Selma could have been named Sandwich?

According to a Fresno County social media post , they said that Fresno County’s second incorporated city could have been named Sandwich. In the post, they don’t give an exact reason why it could have been named Sandwich, but they do go into some of the history of the city.

In the post, it says that Selma began as a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad in the 1870s. Ten years later, the 40-acre townsite would open its first post office and establish the Valley View School District.

Officials say in 1893, Selma was incorporated and became the second city in Fresno County. It was called “Home of the Peach” until the 1960s when it was changed to the “Raisin Capital of the World.”
