Edith Wilson, wife of the 28th president, is the subject of this year “Sweet Tea and Spicy Talk.”

SELMA — The Max G. Creech Selma Historical Museum has announced the return of “Sweet Tea and Spicy Talk,” its summer lecture program.

The annual summer event “takes a lighthearted and anecdotal look at history,” said the museum’s Eric Jackson.

This summer’s program is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the museum, 104 W. Anderson St., Selma. The lecture will explore the life and legacy of First Lady Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States.

“Edith Wilson has been called the first woman president,” Jackson said. “This program will dive deep into that statement and explore many other facets of Mrs. Wilson’s extraordinary life.”

“One interesting fact about Mrs. Wilson is that she is a direct descendant of Pocahontas,” Jackson noted. Also, she was the first woman in Washington to own an automobile.

“Her life took her from rural southwest Virginia to the royal palaces of Europe,” Jackson added.

The program is free, and the air-conditioned museum will serve iced tea.
