SELMA — AdVenture Development is adding sporting goods and outdoor gear to the retail mix at Eastfield Crossing.

Texas-based Academy Sports + Outdoors is hiring about 70 people for a store that will open this fall.

“We are excited to join the community and bring fun to all,” the retailer said in a Facebook post.

Academy Sports has opened a hiring office in a mobile unit behind Old North State Food Hall, 67 JR Road, Selma. People can also apply online at careers.academy.com .

The retailer is looking to hire both full-time and part-time workers. Some of the store’s “team members” will work in apparel, fishing and hunting, footwear and sporting goods. Others will run cash registers, receive and stock inventory, and fill online orders.

The store’s “team leads” will essentially manage all of that.

For all of its hires, Academy Sports prefers outdoor enthusiasts with some retail experience. Benefits include a 20% employee discount on merchandise, tuition reimbursement, and employer contributions to 401(k) retirement accounts.

Academy Sports + Outdoors got its start in 1938 when two business partners purchased Southern Sales, a six-store chain of unprofitable Army-Navy surplus outlets, according to Wikipedia.

In 2011, the investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts purchased what had become Academy Sports + Outdoors. Thirteen years later, the chain has 291 stores spread across 19 states and territories.

The Selma store will be the company’s 17th in North Carolina. Its closest North Carolina store is in Knightdale.

In 2023, the retailer had sales of $6.4 billion.

Academy Sports + Outdoors will join retail giant Target, Hobby Lobby, Old Navy, Marshalls, Ross, Burlington and Five Below in Eastfield.
