SEYMOUR ( KFDX/KJTL ) — A Seymour native is leading the charge of beautifying his hometown with a new non-profit he founded, and now his hard work is starting to pay off.

It’s been two years in the making for The Seymour Beautification Project founder Randy Hardin. Now, the nonprofit is making strides in beautifying the town it loves, starting with an old gas station and honoring the ranching industry.

“I have a very big appreciation for my time in Seymour,” Hardin said. Born and raised in the town, Hardin said he always wanted to give back.

“Two or three years ago, I originally had this idea,” Hardin explained.

When it was first built in the 1940s, the Phillips 66 gas station stood tall, but it has lost its luster since its closure. Its grass was overgrown, windows void of glass, and lost the elements that had previously given the building its character.

Hardin and his four board members have turned the old gas station into an art monument to honor ranchers in Baylor County.

“My sister actually came up with a ‘Home on the Range’ brand,” Hardin said. “We’ve contacted the local ranches in and around Seymour and Baylor County as a way of honoring and recognizing how important the ranching industry is to Seymour.”

The ranches’ brands will soon be on display, a missing element that muralist Selena Mize says will tie it together.

“It’s always important to really highlight small towns like that in their history,” Mize said. “A good step in the right direction to incorporate more public art pieces.”

Now living in Frisco, Hardin isn’t done as the Seymour Beautification Project eyes more improvement.

“With really creative ideas, we can take different opportunities here and in Seymour and make something really, really special about them,” he said. The non-profit aims to improve the quality of life in the heart of Baylor County.

Ranchers will brand the building on July 13 after the Seymour Rodeo Parade.

The non-profit exceeded its goal for the gas station project and plans to use the extra money for future projects.
