Asian American women stabbed in San Francisco in broad daylight, police arrest suspect

(SAN FRANCISCO) Police in San Francisco arrested a man for stabbing two older Asian American women without warning Tuesday in the middle of downtown.

The stabbings occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in the area of Market Street near Fourth Street. The San Francisco Police Department Tenderloin Station's officers located and arrested a 54-year-old male San Francisco resident around 7 p.m. in the 600 block of Eddy Street. The suspect has not been officially identified.

One of the victims, 85-year-old Chui Fong Eng, was seriously injured from stab wounds in the chest and arm. Eng, a San Francisco resident for over 50 years, just finished grocery shopping in Chinatown and was waiting for the bus when she was stabbed, KPIX 5 reported.

Eng was transported to the hospital with a knife still lodged in her body. She underwent surgery at Zuckerberg San Francisco General on Tuesday night.

The second victim was 65 years old. She was also transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General for surgery. She has not been identified at this time.

San Francisco District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney said both women were out of surgery and stable as of Tuesday night, calling the stabbings "disgusting" and "horrific" on Twitter.

The SFPD has not indicated whether the women — who did not know each other — were specifically targeted or whether the attack might be a hate crime.
