Governor Carney Signs Bill at The Starboard Making Orange Crush Delaware's Official State Cocktail

    2024-08-16

Governor John Carney signed a bill on Friday at The Starboard restaurant in Dewey Beach, officially designating the Orange Crush as Delaware's state cocktail. The signing ceremony took place at the iconic beachside bar, known for popularizing the drink in the region.

The Orange Crush, a cocktail made with fresh orange juice, vodka, triple sec, and a splash of soda, has become a staple of summer in Delaware. Originally created in Maryland, the drink quickly gained popularity across Delaware's beaches, particularly at The Starboard, which has served the cocktail for years.

Governor Carney praised the Orange Crush as a symbol of Delaware's vibrant beach culture. "The Orange Crush is more than just a drink; it's a part of the summer experience here in Delaware," Carney said during the signing. "It represents the fun, relaxation, and enjoyment that our beaches offer to both residents and visitors."

The bill, sponsored by Senator Ernie Lopez and Representative Pete Schwartzkopf, received strong support in the state legislature. "This is a fun and lighthearted way to celebrate a drink that has become synonymous with Delaware's coastal lifestyle," said Senator Lopez.

Representative Schwartzkopf, who represents the Dewey Beach area, highlighted the significance of the location for the signing. "The Starboard has played a huge role in making the Orange Crush what it is today. It’s fitting that this bill is being signed here, where so many people have enjoyed this refreshing cocktail," he said.

The Orange Crush has not only become a favorite among locals but also attracts tourists who visit Delaware’s beaches. The drink's popularity has spread beyond the state, but Delawareans proudly claim it as their own.

The new law officially recognizes the Orange Crush as Delaware's state cocktail, joining other state symbols such as the Blue Hen and the peach blossom. The designation is expected to boost the drink's popularity even further, especially as the summer season continues.

As part of the celebration, The Starboard offered discounted Orange Crushes throughout the day, drawing large crowds to witness the historic signing. The event was a festive occasion, with live music and speeches from local leaders who expressed their pride in the new state symbol.

The Orange Crush's journey from a local favorite to an official state symbol reflects Delaware's strong beach culture and the importance of its coastal communities. With the signing of this bill, the Orange Crush is now cemented as a key part of Delaware's identity.
