Just in time for the fall and holiday seasons, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed landmark legislation aimed at supporting the state’s small craft manufacturers of spirits, ciders, and meads. The new law allows these producers to ship their unique products directly to consumers, both within New York and across state lines, without the need for a third-party distributor.

The timing of this legislation is significant, as it coincides with popular seasonal activities such as Leaf Peeper season and Apple Picker weekends, making it easier for consumers to purchase and share locally-made beverages. This move is expected to provide a substantial boost to New York’s craft beverage industry, which includes the largest number of craft cideries in the nation.

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of this legislation in a recent press release, stating, “New York’s craft manufacturers create distinctive, world-class products that deserve a broader audience. This legislation levels the playing field, allowing these small producers to reach new markets and foster economic growth across the state. With this new law, we are ensuring that New York remains a national leader in craft beverages, continuing to support our local businesses, tourism, and agriculture.”

The law is seen as a critical step in expanding the market for New York's craft beverages, providing small-scale producers with a new way to distribute their products directly to consumers, thereby bypassing the complexities and costs associated with traditional distribution channels. This will not only help these businesses grow but also enhance the availability of locally produced goods to consumers who appreciate the unique flavors and quality that New York’s craft makers offer.

The legislation will take effect in 90 days, just in time for the holiday season, allowing New Yorkers to easily send their favorite local spirits, ciders, and meads as gifts to friends and family. This new law underscores New York's commitment to supporting its local industries and maintaining its status as a leader in the craft beverage sector.
