Vermont Senators Peter Welch and Bernie Sanders have introduced a new bill aimed at significantly increasing Social Security survivor benefits. The proposed legislation, known as the Social Security Survivor Benefits Equity Act, seeks to modernize the outdated Social Security death benefit, which has remained at $255 since 1954. Under the new bill, the benefit would be adjusted to reflect current economic conditions, raising the amount to $2,900 by next year.

The act would help families cover essential costs associated with the death of a loved one, including cremation and burial expenses, which have steadily risen over the years. “No family should face financial hardship in honoring their loved one’s memory,” said Senator Sanders. The increase in benefits is expected to provide much-needed financial relief, especially for low-income families who rely heavily on Social Security.

The bill has gained traction as both senators advocate for bringing Social Security benefits in line with the cost of living and modern economic realities. "It’s time to update these benefits to meet the needs of today’s families,” stated Senator Welch.

If passed, this act would be a significant step in addressing the financial challenges faced by grieving families, ensuring that Social Security remains a reliable safety net for Americans. The senators are hopeful that this initiative will gain bipartisan support and become law, providing much-needed support to families across the nation.

how about increasing the benefits so to speak, by not taxing them in Vermont. cap would be reasonable.
