Bluff City budget increases garbage, water and sewer rates
The Town of Bluff City approved its budget for the next fiscal year Tuesday night, and while property taxes will not increase, garbage collection fees, water and sewer rates will. In addition to the 5% water/sewer rate hike, garbage collection fees in the town will be increased to $22 a month. According to Mayor Jeff Broyles, the average resident in town with both water and sewer will see an increase of less than $4. He also mentioned that online bill-paying services will be available soon, but did not specify a date.

Juvenile arrested in Chilhowie gas station stabbing incident
A juvenile suspect was taken into custody by the Tennessee Highway Patrol early Saturday around an hour after allegedly attacking a gas station clerk with a knife in Chilhowie. The Chilhowie Police Department says a THP trooper witnessed a vehicle swerving while using a cell phone at approximately 1:48 a.m. Saturday. The trooper attempted a traffic stop before the driver began a reckless pursuit. Monday, the THP notified Chilhowie Police that the driver was identified as the wanted suspect in an armed robbery attempt that had occurred nearly an hour prior. The juvenile suspect allegedly attacked a gas station clerk with a knife in an attempted robbery. The juvenile is awaiting extradition to Virginia on a charge of attempted first-degree murder and is also facing charges in Tennessee. The juvenile has been identified as a missing runaway from Massachusetts. He is currently being held in the Upper Tennessee Juvenile Detention Center in Johnson City. The case is still under investigation and more charges could be filed.
