NC investing millions in universities to address nursing shortage
Western Carolina University announced on Monday the School of Nursing will be receiving a grant of over $2 million to expand its nursing degree program. This grant comes as the UNC System aims to alleviate the nursing shortage in the state. Director of WCU’s School of Nursing Dr. Terri Durbin said the university is one of 11 colleges awarded extra funding, allocated by the UNC System.
To increase retention, NC HBCUs are hiring student “success coaches”
A growing number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities are hiring student success coaches to increase retention. The initiative is part of a collaboration between the United Negro College Fund and a coaching organization called InsideTrack. Oak Island land use plan update moves forward
Oak Island Town Council cleared a couple of key hurdles during its July 9 meeting in its ongoing efforts to update the town’s land use plan. On Tuesday night, council approved a contract with Civil & Environmental Engineering Firm NCWithersRavenel to update the comprehensive land use plan for $169,000, with $50,000 dedicated towards a streetscape master plan to look at possible improvements in the commercial district. Oak Island’s current land use plan is eight years old; similar documents are typically updated every five years.
