Occupancy tax moves forward amid some concerns
St. James Town Council has decided to move ahead with a possible occupancy tax, but at least one of its members wants to make it clear that nothing is set in stone. During the board’s July 18 agenda workshop, Town Manager Jeff Repp presented a draft of the resolution St. James would enact in the event council approved a 5% occupancy tax on rental accommodations. The General Assembly granted the town authority to initiate the tax during its last session, and Repp said the resolution could only be enacted following a public hearing that allows for public comment. The town also would have to establish a Tourism Development Authority (TDA)to oversee the funds, which only could be spent on tourism-related expenses. Although St. James currently doesn’t have a hotel that would provide the biggest boost from an occupancy tax, council could still adopt the resolution.
