Despite Warm Weekend Weather, Don't Plant Those Indoor Seeds Just Yet

SHARON, Mass. ( WBZ NewsRadio ) — This weekend's weather will be on the warmer side, with temperatures reaching as high as 60 in some areas.

If you have a green thumb, you might be tempted to take advantage of the warm temps and start planting seeds indoors for your outdoor summer garden. Experts in Sharon, however, say don't go dropping those seeds into the soil just yet.

"It's still a little early, at least for this region," Jenna of Ward's Berry Farm told WBZ NewsRadio Friday. "Because if you start seeds indoors now, they’re not going to get enough light and they’re going to get leggy (tall but with few leaves) before they make it out to the fields."

The best time to start planting is the middle of March.

"Take a seed, you put it in some soil, usually in a tray, and cover those up with just a little bit of soil," Jenna said. "Typically, they say you want to plant a seed twice as deep as it is wide."

Planting your own seeds also has benefits. Jenna said it may be more convenient to buy plants from a nursery, but it is a lot less expensive to seed your own. There is also an emotional reward when the seed starts to germinate.

"When you see that first seed first pop out of the soil in Spring, that feeling never gets old," said Jenna.
