Sharpsburg Mayor Robert Williams faces another drunken driving charge after he was arrested Monday in Rocky Mount. This is Williams’ third DWI charge since December.
The Rocky Mount Police Department received a 5:37 p.m. call from an anonymous person who reported a reckless driver traveling southbound on North Wesleyan Boulevard, RMPD public information officer Typhani Gray said in a press release. Officers initiated a traffic stop on a white Dodge Ram pickup truck and identified Williams as the driver.
Police subsequently arrested Williams, 59, on charges of driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, possession of an open container and a concealed handgun permit violation, the release states.
PREVIOUS DWI ARRESTS
Town of Sharpsburg commissioners stripped Williams of his duties on Jan. 4 following a Dec. 21 DWI arrest in Rocky Mount.
Williams’ blood alcohol level registered 0.21, nearly three times the legal limit, authorities said at the time. Rocky Mount police pulled Williams over on the 100 block of South Wesleyan Boulevard after a concerned citizen reported a driver who appeared to be impaired.
Commissioners unanimously voted on Jan. 4 to suspend Williams’ authority as mayor, citing state law. The board declared Williams “mentally and physically incapable” of performing his mayoral duties due to “his serious issues with alcohol,” according to the Jan. 4 motion. The board has also called on Williams to resign.
On Feb. 6, commissioners were holding their regular monthly board meeting when Williams “drove onto” town property and demanded a copy of the meeting’s agenda from Sharpsburg Police Chief Michael Thomas, authorities said. Thomas noticed Williams’ slurred speech and unbalanced gait, police explained at the time.
Police said Williams denied drinking any alcohol and tried to drive away. Police later charged Williams with DWI, possession of an open container, being drunk and disruptive, resisting arrest, failing to comply with a license restriction and trespassing. Police said his blood-alcohol level registered 0.13 at the time.
Voters reelected Williams by a 19-vote margin in 2021. His current term expires in November 2025.
Williams pleaded guilty to DWI in January 2019 following an impaired driving arrest the day he was elected mayor in a May 2018 special election.
