KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – A suspect arrested in a drive-by shooting near the Shawnee Sports Complex was in court Thursday for a bond hearing.

Kaden Bowman’s attorney argued that Bowman only shot in self-defense as the other suspects allegedly fired at him with a semi-automatic rifle. However, the state argues both parties caused wanton endangerment because of the close proximity to both homes and to the Shawnee Sports Complex, where children were playing in the West Virginia Soccer Tournament Open Cup.

His bond reduction request was denied.

All three suspects in the incident last appeared in court on May 29.

According to the Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Zion Clark and Kaden Bowman both waived their preliminary hearings. Their cases will now be bound over to a grand jury. The magistrate court found probable cause against the third suspect, Antonio Jacobs. His case will also go to a grand jury.

They are all facing wanton endangerment charges in connection to shots fired at an apartment complex on Smoot Street in Institute. The incident happened around 2:53 p.m. Sunday, May 19. The West Virginia Soccer Association Open Cup was being held at the complex at the time, with some participants as young as under eight.
