The 2024 Street Art Regatta (StAR) recently concluded its successful event, drawing crowds to the picturesque Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale. Notable attendees, including Mayor Dean J. Trantailis, dropped by to watch the action.

Young sailors, some as young as their teens, demonstrated their skills on the waterway, accompanied by the melodic tunes of Christopher Cross’s “Sailing.” The event featured over 50 painted sails, showcasing the artistic talents of both local and national artists.

Among the featured artists were Lulu Sanchez, Nice and Easy, Brian Butler, and Ivan Roque, whose unique designs added a vibrant splash of color to the regatta.

“The Street Art Regatta is a celebration of sailing and artistic expression, reflecting the vibrant spirit of our community,” said Clare Vickery of Grace Arts FL, the producer of the event.

Organized in collaboration with Coral Ridge Yacht Club Sailing & Watersports Foundation and Quantum Sailing International, the event was a testament to teamwork and community involvement.
Special recognition goes to Connie and Peter Commette, seasoned sailors with Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Program, with sailing coach Alex van Puffelen playing vital roles in ensuring the event’s success.

Attendee and local filmmaker Cathleen Dean, said, “Taking part in my very first regatta was a special moment for me, as someone who adores both art and water. I hope that more people get to experience the joy and excitement that comes with this unique combination.”

Swim Coach Rol White said “The Street Art Regatta was a stunning blend of art and education, showcasing the talents of both artists and young children. “As a dedicated swim coach for local black youth in Fort Lauderdale, I was motivated to involve some of my swimmers in this event, in the future. The inclusive and welcoming atmosphere of the Regatta made me feel it could be a perfect opportunity for my young athletes to learn to sail, showcase their skills and be inspired by the diverse range of experiences on display.”

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park provided the perfect backdrop for attendees to relax and enjoy post-event activities with family and friends. The event, free for all to attend, emphasized inclusivity and accessibility to the broader community.
