    The Hidden Gems of Destin

    2023-04-08

Destin, Florida, is known for its white sand beaches, emerald green waters, and abundant seafood restaurants. However, there are many hidden gems in this coastal town that even some locals are unaware of. In this article, we will explore six local spots that offer a unique perspective on the beauty and culture of Destin.

    Crab Island

Crab Island is a sandbar located in the middle of the bay, and it's a favorite among boaters who anchor and enjoy the shallow water, food vendors, and live music. However, the beauty of Crab Island is not only limited to the fun and frolic; there's a lot more to explore!

One of my favorite things to do at Crab Island is to rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the surrounding waters. The crystal-clear water offers an excellent view of the marine life beneath the surface, and the peacefulness of the area is a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Destin History and Nature Trail

The Destin History and Nature Trail is a 5-mile walking path that takes you through the heart of Destin, passing by historic landmarks, natural areas, and beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico. Walking this trail is a great way to get some exercise while exploring the local culture and history.

I love walking the trail early in the morning when the sun is just coming up. The cool breeze and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore create a serene atmosphere, and it's the perfect time to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife, such as ospreys and pelicans.

    The Village of Baytowne Wharf

Located in nearby Sandstone, the Village of Baytowne Wharf is a pedestrian village that features a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. As a local, I love coming here to shop at the local boutiques and eat at restaurants that offer a unique blend of local and international flavors.

The weekly outdoor movies shown on the lawn at Baytowne Wharf are one of my favorite things to do. The free event is a great way to spend a relaxing evening with family and friends while enjoying a classic movie under the stars.

Indian Bayou Golf & Country Club

The Indian Bayou Golf & Country Club is a 27-hole golf course that is a popular spot for golf enthusiasts to enjoy a round of golf while taking in the beautiful scenery. As a local, I love coming here to play a round of golf with friends and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

However, even if you're not an avid golfer, the Indian Bayou Golf & Country Club is still worth a visit. The clubhouse offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and the restaurant serves delicious food that is sure to satisfy any appetite.

    Henderson Beach Nature Preserve

The Henderson Beach Nature Preserve is a 208-acre preserve that is home to a variety of natural habitats, such as sand pine scrub, coastal dune lakes, and wetlands. As a local, I love coming here to hike, birdwatch, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

One of the highlights of the Henderson Beach Nature Preserve is the boardwalk that takes you through the coastal dune lakes. The lakes are a unique ecosystem that is only found in a few places around the world, and they offer an excellent opportunity to see a variety of wildlife, such as herons and egrets.

    Mattie Kelly Arts Center

The Mattie Kelly Arts Center is a performing arts center that hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year. As a local, I love coming here to experience everything from live music to theater performances.

One of my favorite events at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center is the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra's annual performance of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker." The beautiful music, stunning choreography, and intricate costumes make for an unforgettable evening of entertainment.

Mattie Kelly Arts Center also hosts art exhibits, lectures, and workshops, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local arts scene. There's also a chance to meet other art enthusiasts in the local community and learn about the local culture.

    Final Thoughts

Locals will tell you that Destin has many hidden gems awaiting discovery, despite its popularity as a tourist destination. Here, you can experience rich cultural experiences at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center as well as the tranquil beauty of Crab Island.

If you're visiting Destin for the first time, don't limit yourself to the popular tourist spots. Don't miss out on the hidden gems that make this town so special. Explore the local culture. It won't disappoint you!
