2 rescued after boat sinks on Lake Erie

SHEFFIELD LAKE , Ohio (WJW) — Two people were rescued from the water after their boat overturned on Lake Erie on Saturday morning, according to a news release.

Sheffield Lake firefighters got a call at about 8:30 a.m. for a report of a boat sinking about a half-mile off the shore, according to the release .

Firefighters launched the department’s two jet skis and found the overturned boat about about a half-mile off the shores of Shell Cove Park, 20 minutes after the initial call.

Responders and people in a nearby fishing boat worked together to help the boaters onto the jet skis and back to the shore.

The two people rescued were wearing life jackets and were not injured, according to the release.

Sheffield Lake and Lorain police, Avon Lake firefighters, the U.S. Coast Guard and Ohio Department of Natural Resources were all involved with the rescue, according to the release.

“Sheffield Lake Fire Department would like to thank all of the other agencies involved, whose cooperation brought a positive ending to the incident,” reads the release.

The incident was one of multiple water rescues on Lake Erie on Saturday.

Coast Guard crews and local first responders rescued three people following a Saturday morning distress call, one of whom was unresponsive. A fourth person in the boat was still missing as of Saturday afternoon.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew diverted from the search for that missing boater to rescue five people from the water on Lake Erie near Ashtabula after their 22-foot boat was “swamped” by a wave.
