29 different pretzel and candy products from Palmer Candy Company across 17 states have been recalled due to Salmonella risk . The affected products were distributed to to stores like Walmart, Target, and Dollar General. The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reported the recall, which was issued voluntarily by Palmer Candy Company, on May 18th, but was updated to a Class I recall on August 6th, 2024. A Class I recall is the highest threat level of recall the FDA has. Read on for more details, including exactly which products the recall includes and what to do if you’ve purchased them.
Palmer Candy Company Pretzel Recall
According to the FDA, the affected pretzels were sold in the following states: Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. See below for a full list of the affected products and their best by dates:
The risk of Salmonella comes in the form of the liquid coating that the pretzels and other products are in. The liquid coating manufacturer contacted Palmer Candy Company to notify them that there was a potential for contamination with salmonella from an ingredient that was potentially contaminated from one of their suppliers.
The recall was reclassified as a Class I recall by the FDA earlier this month. Class I recalls are defined as "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," according to the FDA's website. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. However, if you have consumed any of the affected products, there are the symptoms of salmonella infection to look out for: stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, and headache.
