Meghan Markle added an extra touch of sparkle to her Colombia trip with Prince Harry. She not only charmed the crowds with her engaging personality, but she also surprised them with her confidence in speaking Spanish. Her appreciation for the country’s language and culture added something special to the Sussexes’ tour which was already a resounding success.

On Aug. 18, Meghan and Harry stopped at the Municipal Theatre in Cali to enjoy performances and a Q&A session. Midway through the conversation, the Duchess of Sussex took out her earpiece and wowed the crowd with her linguistics skills . Per the Sussex.com website , she expressed “her deep appreciation for the Colombian hospitality. She praised the culture and history of the country, describing the visit as a dream and highlighting the strong sense of community she felt.”

For casual royal fans, this was the first time hearing that Meghan was bilingual. However, people who follow Harry and Meghan closely know that this isn’t the first time she’s whipped out her Spanish during an engagement. During a charity visit to Homeboy Industries in June 2020, Meghan showed off her fluency with another participant.

“She spoke Spanish perfectly with one young woman,” Homeboy Industries founder Father Greg Boyle told People . “She just went right into Spanish, which was a revelation — and it was very good.” The Duchess of Sussex likely honed her Spanish-speaking skills when she studied abroad in Madrid, Spain in 2002, and during her U.S. Embassy internship in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her college experience wound up coming in handy for her future philanthropic career.

‘I would like to begin in Spanish because we are in your country, my husband and I, and I can feel this embrace from Colombia,” she told the audience in Cali. “Sorry if my Spanish is not perfect because I learned it 20 years ago in Argentina, but I’m trying here because I can feel this community and this feeling which is the best in the world.”

Her sweet effort made an impact on the crowd and one Colombian journalist noted to the Daily Mail , “For Meghan to say my friend in that way is such a powerful statement and shows just how close they have become. People will take note of that.” Her linguistic skills just might score Harry and Meghan another cultural visit invite — where will they wind up next?
