On the first night of the Democratic National Convention , viewers at home and attendees in Chicago were surprised when they saw actor and director Tony Goldwyn take the stage. After all, in a convention full of real-life politicians, seeing someone who played a politician for years in the hit show Scandal was very much not in the cards.

Nonetheless, Goldwyn was met with cheer and excitement from the crowd. The actor, who has been politically outspoken over the years, served as the night’s host, preparing attendees on what’s come, outlining the mission of the DNC, and, of course, reminding them to vote and support presidential candidate Kamala Harris .

But, in addition to hearing and cheering for Goldwyn’s speech, fans couldn’t help but ask themselves if his Scandal co-star Kerry Washington might be waiting in the wings.

But while she didn’t take the stage that night, Washington eventually came to show her support, and fans went crazy for it.

“Giving the people what they want @tonygoldwyn #ForDemocracy #DMC #Olitz,” Washington wrote on X alongside two pictures of them. In the first shot, Washington and Goldwyn smile for a selfie while Harris’ Vice-President Tim Walz is seen taking the stage for his speech. In the second pic, Washington is seen pointing to Goldwyn’s nose while he holds up his arms and shrugs.

In the responses, fans of Scandals are clearly freaking out over their reunion.

“Let me go re-watch Scandal ’cause it’s giving NOSTALGIA,” wrote an X user. “Still shipping them after all these years…☺️,” wrote another. “wow, my parents look great here 🥹,” joked another.

As a reminder, Washington and Golwyn’s characters Olivia Pope and President Fitz made up one of the steamiest couples ever to grace TV. So, of course, whenever they have their friendly reunions every once in a while, fans of the show have their hearts skipping a beat.

Scandal : Tony Goldwyn, Kerry Washington in ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President’ (Season 2, Episode 8, aired December 6, 2012).

Talking to Variety , Goldwyn talked about his role as DNC’s host, and why the moment felt weirdly full-circle.

“Honestly have never felt energy like that,” the actor said of the moment he walked onstage. “It was like walking onto a giant wave. I was very honored to be asked to do it. It was a long night, but a really fun one.”

Given his role as POTUS in the show, Goldwyn couldn’t help but draw the similarities between making a speech at the DNC and his longtime character. “When I told [creator] Shonda Rhimes I was doing it, I told her that life imitates her art,” he said.

With that said, Goldwyn also reassured that he and Washington showing up for the democratic party isn’t a hint Scandal is making a return. “This has nothing to do with Scandal ,” he said. “We’re just two very concerned citizens of the United States of America.”

When asked if Washington would ever join him onstage, Goldwyn said it’s all up to Vice President Harris. “I would say those chances are slim,” he said. “But if Kamala asked us to, I suppose we would.”

Looks like Goldwyn and Washington are as engaged in politics as ever, both on and off the cameras!
