Jennifer Lopez Shows How Serious She Is About Divorcing Ben Affleck With This One Detail

Jennifer Lopez’s decision to divorce Ben Affleck did not come lightly. Her inner circle publicly discussed her hope for a reconciliation with the 52-year-old actor, but he seemed ready to move on. When she filed the divorce papers on Tuesday, Aug. 20, Lopez showed her intent to end the marriage. Now, a new detail proves she’s serious about this split because fans know how important this was to her when they married in 2022.

Lopez filed additional court documents on Thursday, Aug. 22 that were obtained by Us Weekly , and that’s where the revealing clue was found. The “Jenny From the Block” singer requested to change her legal name from Jennifer Affleck back to Jennifer Lynn Lopez. She also added the reason for their breakup, which was the standard “ irreconcilable differences ,” and she is asking the court not to award spousal support on either side. The legal papers also cited that the split of their financial assets “will be determined” at a later date.

Lopez addressed why she changed her last name to “Affleck” in the November 2022 issue of Vogue — she was leaning all the way into the “romance” of their Bennifer 2.0 reunion. “People are still going to call me Jennifer Lopez. But my legal name will be Mrs. Affleck because we’re joined together,” she gushed. “We’re husband and wife. I’m proud of that. I don’t think that’s a problem.”

She pushed back on her critics who thought it was an old-fashioned and submissive move for a woman who has triumphed female empowerment in her career. “It feels like it’s a power move, you know what I mean? I’m very much in control of my own life and destiny and feel empowered as a woman and as a person,” Lopez said. “I can understand that people have their feelings about it, and that’s okay, too. But if you want to know how I feel about it, I just feel like it’s romantic. It still carries tradition and romance to me, and maybe I’m just that kind of girl.”

Even amid their marital troubles in the late spring, Affleck’s iPhone was caught by the paparazzi’s camera lens. (See the photo HERE .) His contact for Lopez popped up with a glossy image of his wife and the name, “Jennifer Affleck.” He loved his wife’s romantic gesture as much as she did.
