Lady Gaga Explained How Her Mom Played a Critical Role in Her Relationship With Fiancé Michael Polansky

You know the expression “mother knows best?” So, when it comes to Lady Gaga and her fiancé Michael Polansky , that’s phrase couldn’t be more true.

As explained by the singer in a new interview with Vogue , Gaga first heard of Polansky from her mom, who met him during a philanthropy event back in 2019. “My mom met him and she said to me, ‘I think I just met your husband,’ and I said, ‘I’m not ready to meet my husband!’” Gaga remembered. “I could never have imagined that my mom…found the most perfect person for me?”

Fast-forward to December, the “Born This Way” singer was invited to the birthday party of Napster co-founder Sean Parker, Polansky’s longtime associate. “I got invited and I said, ‘I wonder if Michael is going to be there,’ and my mom said yes,” Gaga said.

At the party, Gaga had one mission in mind: to find the man her mom had picked out for her. “So I went to the ​party and I kept asking for him and he finally came over to me and we talked for three hours,” she said. “We had the most amazing conversation.”

“I didn’t know much about her and honestly wasn’t sure what to expect,” Polansky told the outlet of their first time meeting. “I was struck immediately by her warmth and openness—she was so genuinely curious about what my life was like growing up in Minnesota.”

With a magical first meeting in the books, it didn’t take long for Gaga and Polansky to make things serious. “We went on our first date and just fell in love,” the Joker: Folie à Deux star said. “And then COVID hit.”

For the couple, who made their red carpet debut earlier this week at the Venice Film Festival , the timing of the COVID-19 lockdown perfectly worked out for them.

“I’d been so focused on my career since I was a teenager,” Gaga said. “And the gift of that time was that I got to completely focus on my relationship. I met this totally supportive, loving human being who wanted to get to know me—outside of Lady Gaga.”

Now, over four years since they first met, Gaga and Polansky continue to be head over heels for one another. “The missing piece in my life was having real love,” Gaga said.

“I had never met anyone like Michael,” she gushed of her fiancé. “He’s so smart and so kind. And his life and my life are very different. He’s a very private guy and he’s not with me for any other reason than that we are right for each other. But I think what I want my fans to know is that I’m just, like, so happy. I’m healthy. I feel like the last time they heard from me—in this way—was Chromatica, and that album was about an absolutely horrible time for me with my mental health. I was in a really dark place. I struggled for, like, many years before that. But everything started to change. Because I had a real friend who saw the ways in which I was unhappy and why. And he wasn’t afraid to truly hold my hand. And get to know me. On a very deep level.”

Per reporters, the two lovebirds got engaged earlier this year in the spring. “They’re both extremely happy and excited about this moment in their relationship,” a source told Entertainment Tonight. Looks like her mom was right after all!
