Ewan McGregor Reveals 23-Year-Old Daughter Jamyan’s Unexpected Career Path & We Have Questions

Ewan McGregor was just honored at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Scottish actor spoke of his family in his moving acceptance speech. The Star Wars star shares daughters Clara, 28, Jamyan, 23, Esther, 22, and Anouk, 13 with ex-wife Eve Mavrakis and 3-year-old son Laurie with wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead. All five got a special shoutout from their dad.

His daughter Esther has an acting career of her own and couldn’t be at the ceremony because of a current project. As for Clara, McGregor spoke of acting alongside her.

“I was very lucky to work with my daughter Clara, here, on a movie called Bleeding Love ,” he said, per People . ” … What a privilege, I got to play Clara’s dad and be Clara’s dad at the same time. I was on set and I was re-inspired by watching her passion and enthusiasm for this thing we do.”

He then spoke to his daughter Anouk who is too young to act but is “an amazing human being.” And he later spoke to little Laurie, urging the toddler to say hello to the crowd.

And then there’s Jamyan, who is doing her own thing entirely.

“Jamyan, my beautiful daughter Jamyan, I’m not going to be acting with Jamyan because Jamyan is going to be a homicide detective,” he said. “She is cutting her own path and we’re so proud of you, Jamyan, for everything you’re doing and for the things that you’re going to do with your life.”

A homicide detective?! How incredible is that? First, we have to thank you, Jamyan, for all the hard and important work you are about to do.

And then we have to get into our laundry list of questions:

What inspired you to become a detective — much less a homicide detective? Why, when you could follow in the footsteps of your father and your sisters, did you decide to steer yourself in such a different direction? Where are you in your training? What would you say to little girls — especially little girls of color — who are thinking of entering law enforcement (a field largely dominated by white men)?

McGregor and Mavrakis adopted Jamyan from Mongolia in April 2006 when she was about 4 years old. In his 2020 Apple TV+ docuseries, Long Way Up , he recounted the events that led to her adoption. He was filming a movie in Mongolia, and he and his team were contemplating turning left and taking a route to Russia rather than continuing with the unexpected struggles they faced in the remote terrain of Mongolia.

“Well, we did carry on [in Mongolia and] went to a street shelter for children… And [my co-star and I] were both massively moved by it,” he said . “We left that day, but I couldn’t stop thinking about that little girl.”

“It took nearly two years, but eventually, we adopted Jamyan,” he continued. “So it was like, one of those decisions in life where you think, I can look back on that and go, [turning] would’ve changed everything, you know, if we’d done that — If we’d have turned left, I wouldn’t have met her. So that’s pretty amazing.”

“It was a big moment,” he said, tears in his eyes.
