Prince George, Charlotte, & Louis Have Hilarious Accidental First Run-in With Uncle James Middleton’s Wife

Meeting the family of your significant other is a Big. Deal. It often involves a lot of planning and a lot of premeditative spiraling about all that could go wrong. As the one being introduced, the stress over making a good impression can be all-consuming, but James Middleton’s wife Alizee Thevenet didn’t have the time (or, frankly, the demeanor) to stress about meeting his royal family members.
In his upcoming memoir, Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life , Middleton details the completely unplanned run-in with his sister Kate Middleton and her family.
After attending a wedding near his parents Carole and Michael Middleton’s home, James and his then-girlfriend Alizee spontaneously decided to spend the night at his childhood home.
“We let ourselves in and tiptoed around in the dark, not wanting to wake anyone,” Middleton wrote, per Hello! (Yes, you know where this is going.)
The couple was completely unaware that Kate, her husband Prince William, and their kids Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6 were also there. Not until Middleton was woken by giggles outside his bedroom door. Which had to have been the most adorable alarm clock (or the most frightening given that Middleton thought they were alone).
“It’s George and Charlotte,” he wrote, then learning the kiddos were staying there with their little brother and parents. He quietly made his way downstairs with his niece and nephew, wanting to let Alizee sleep in, and found the Prince and Princess of Wales sipping tea in the kitchen.
HA! Can you imagine?! Sneaking in with your significant other, thinking you would only have your parents to contend with in the morning, and then finding five royals?! We’re cackling and cringing at the same time.
“I’m about to take a cup up to Alizee when she appears at the kitchen door,” Middleton said, per an excerpt from The Daily Mail . “She has just got out of bed, her hair still tousled, and she is wearing one of my shirts. In situations like this, Alizee is wonderfully French. She does not panic or rush upstairs to get dressed.”
“Instead, she just greets everyone warmly as if it’s not remotely unusual to be meeting her boyfriend’s sister and brother-in-law for the first time wearing only an oversized man’s shirt,” he continued, sending us — and apparently the young royals — into a fit of giggles.
After offering a hand and a hello with no trace of awkwardness (teach us your ways, Alizee!), Prince George and Princess Charlotte started asking “all kinds of cheeky questions at 100 miles per hour.” (Prince Louis must have been too young to partake, otherwise, we bet that wild card would’ve been fully invested!)
“How come we weren’t there when they went to bed? And who is this lady? Is she your girlfriend?” they asked. All very fair and very embarrassing questions to receive from your young niece and nephew when you were totally unprepared. But what could have been a trainwreck of a conversation instantly proved to be a success.
“So I tell Charlotte and George, yes, she is my girlfriend and introduce her to them, then we are all talking and laughing as if she has been part of the family for years.”
Thevenet captured the Middleton family’s heart during that impromptu, accidental run-in. “When we all hug goodbye I get a special squeeze from Catherine, who whispers in my ear, ‘She’s just great,'” Middleton wrote. Mum’s warm smile tells me she agrees. All my stars have aligned: Alizee is perfect for me and my family adores her.”
Middleton and Thevenet tied the knot in 2021 and welcomed a sweet baby boy, Inigo, in 2023. On his own birthday, Middleton posted the cutest selfie of him and Inigo twinning. “Matching bérets to celebrate my Birthday 🎈,” he captioned the post, because apparently both he and his son are taking after Thevenet’s “wonderfully French” ways.
