Ali Wong Is Tired of the Beauty Industry Targeting Women 'To Fix Ourselves'

Ali Wong is 42 years old and she’s not hiding it from anyone. The talented comedian has made it her mission to talk about the beauty industry and the less-than-ideal message they are sending to women — and men — because aging truly is a privilege. She’s shouting it from the rooftops to InStyle in her new cover story.

The Beef star gave a clear explanation as to how dating Bill Hader after her 2022 divorce from Justin Hakuta, who is also father to her two children, daughters Mari, 8, and Nikki, 6, helped changer her perspective. “This idea that men aren’t attracted to women their age, that’s just not true,” she said. “Especially men in their 40s, they want to be with a grown-up. They want to be with a woman who knows herself. They find that hot. They don’t care if you have a belly or loose skin.”

Wong believes that it’s “women who care more” about the anti-aging situation . “It’s all drooping and falling… it’s like playing whack-a-mole,” Wong continued. “And if you are just playing whack-a-mole, if you see aging and getting older as whack-a-mole, it’s so depressing.” She would prefer to “shut out all the noise and look at the reality of what’s going on.” That means the beauty industry really needs a perspective adjustment. “[Women] project that onto ourselves because of all the targeting, and all of these people profiting off of us wanting to fix ourselves,” Wong smartly noted.

She also jokes about the age of 40 being the “golden age to get divorced” in her new Netflix comedy special, Ali Wong: Single Lady . Wong finds hilarity in why the world is her oyster as a single woman (even though she’s dating Hader). “The age range of who I could date is huge,” she quipped in the trailer . “I could go as low as 25 and then I could go as high as 55. Uh, I got questions if you’re 55… Can you go on a brisk walk? Can you lift heavy things? Can you digest red meat without getting a swollen toe the next day?”

Her age also plays into her relationship with the Barry star, too. While they mostly stay off the paparazzi’s radar, fans will find them on a red carpet together on occasion. “We’re very selectively private ,” Wong told Access Hollywood at the 2023 Primetime Emmys about Hader. “We’ve been together for a minute. I guess people didn’t know we were together. But it’s also like, we’re both in our 40s and are parents, so.”

Just remember, Wong is ready for anything in her 40s, just don’t ask her to play into the beauty industry’s standards.
