If you’ve ever wondered how hard press junkets are for both actors and reporters, look no further than journalist Kjersti Flaa’s 2012 interview with Anne Hathaway for Les Misérables . It’s a long day of media where the actors answer the same questions over and over again while the reporter sometimes gets as little as four minutes of their time.

Flaa thought she had a creative idea to sing her questions and have the movie musical’s cast sing their answers back. It’s cute, but it can also be exhausting if a star isn’t into it. Well, Hathaway wasn’t into it even though Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman were up to it, per Flaa’s TikTok account. It was clear Hathaway was having a bad day, judging from her curt responses. The journalist described it as a “cringe interview” in her TikTok caption and added, “This didn’t go as planned.”

Fans had a mixed reaction to the clip with some criticizing the interviewer’s techniques while others were not pleased with Hathaway’s response. “Don’t ask yes or no questions. Interviewing 101,” wrote one social media user. Another added, “But the questions are so ridiculous though.” An anti-Hathaway commenter chimed in, “they can never make me like you Anne Hathaway.” Another critic wrote, “People have to stop putting celebrities on a pedestal. Enough of all of them. I’m ready for the fall of Hollywood.”

Well, some celebrities like to be accountable for their actions, and let’s put Hathaway on that list. The 41-year-old actress offered Flaa an apology via her publicist. The journalist posted a follow-up video that highlighted Hathaway’s reaction.

“She sent me a long email explaining to me what she was going through right then when she did this interview, and she apologized for being…giving me an awful interview basically,” she revealed. “It was so touching to me. Just talking about it makes me almost teary-eyed, ’cause I was just so grateful that she did that. And it was a very personal note. And we decided that I wouldn’t share exactly what was in the email, but I just wanted to share with you guys what she did.” The apology also included an invitation to interview her for her next film. “So, yes, I’m really looking forward to that, Anne,” Flaa added. “Thank you so much for doing that.”

In March, Hathaway addressed the “Hathahate” she experienced the year of her Oscar win for Les Misérables. She felt like she was just a theater kid excited by the experience, but critics believed she was too earnest and annoying. She told Vanity Fair that “a lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online.” It sounds like there were quite a few lessons learned over a decade ago, and Hathaway is making sure to change the narrative.
