King Charles III’s reign hasn’t been very smooth — just when he thinks he’s out of hot water, another scandal arises . The latest issue is quite a doozy for anyone who assumed that working at the palace would be a glamorous job. The newest posting indicates that a very wealthy man appears to be very stingy with his money.

The king is looking for a housekeeper to join his household at Windsor Castle, but according to Need to Know , the original job posting paid less than the U.K. minimum wage , which is currently “£11.44 minimum wage for adults aged over 21.” The listing claimed to pay only £22,000 ($28,680) per week, which at 40 hours a week is an hourly rate of £10.54.

Since the initial uproar over the low — and illegal— pay for a very hard job was revealed, the career listing was updated. “The salary originally listed was an error which has since been amended,” a source revealed to the publication. The salary has been adjusted to £24,188 ($31,500) per year, but is that really much better? While it is considered an entry-level job, surely the king would want to take good care of his staff. He is reportedly worth £1.8 billion ($2.3 billion), per The Guardian.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that social media had some scathing thoughts about Charles and his less-than-generous salary offering for his new housekeeper. One X account wrote , “stingy with his billions, yet sucks the citizens dry. how can they continue to support this ridiculous family?” Another user posted a snapshot of the job listing and added their commentary, “Charlie just had a massive pay rise but advertising a job as housekeeping assistant just above minimum wage but you do get 20% off at Royal Collection Trust Shops, the boot kickers will be queuing up in their droves.”

While there seems to be a possibility of moving up the royal staff ranks, King Charles needs to do better because the optics are pretty crummy — especially in a tough economy. This debacle comes on the heels of the July news that he’s getting a £45m pay rise, thanks to the profits of the sovereign grant which is the supporting fund of the royal family . The Guardian revealed that the additional cash “will be used to fund the final stages of the Buckingham Palace reservicing program, enabling it to be complete both on time and on budget,” said Michael Stevens, the king’s Keeper of the Privy Purse.

Once the renovation is completed in 2027, the hope is to reduce the pay raise so Charles will be “funded at an appropriate level” — or perhaps he should spread the wealth to his workers.
