MS13 gang leader wanted for murder in San Salvador sentenced after 2023 Alabama arrest
One of El Salvador’s Top 100 Most Wanted fugitives has been sentenced to federal prison after his arrest in Shelby County last year. U.S. District Court Judge Anna Manasco sentenced 30-year-old Juan Carlos Portillo to the maximum sentence of two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to one count of illegal re-entry after deportation, according to a joint announcement Thursday by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona and Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Katrina W. Berger.

Brush fire affecting Shelby County contained
A fire in the Cahaba Wildlife Management Area is contained, but smoke could hang around for a while this morning. Helena Fire Chief Christopher Miller says they were the first department to respond to the fire, although it was outside of their coverage. County 17 Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
