ALABASTER – Construction has begun on renovating the former O’Charley’s building in Alabaster into a new Big Whiskey’s restaurant.

The opening of a Big Whiskey’s restaurant location in Alabaster was first announced back in January. On Wednesday, Aug. 22, the city of Alabaster shared that the developer had begun work on the building renovations for the restaurant in the South Promenade shopping center which is located at 285 South Colonial Drive.

“The family-friendly atmosphere of Big Whiskey’s goes hand-in-hand with the family-friendly atmosphere of the Alabaster community,” said Big Whiskey’s co-owner, Paul Sundy in an official release in January.

The city of Alabaster’s Downtown Redevelopment Authority previously approved a façade grant earlier this year to assist with the major renovations to the facility. According to the minutes of the authority’s meeting on April 10, the building will see various  outside renovations with work done on the outdoor patio and seating area, the removal of hardboard and smart siding and the potential for a painted mural.

The original opening date was projected for July but a new opening date was tentatively set for October during the meeting with the redevelopment authority. However, work began on outside renovations in August and it was reported during that meeting that the construction process on the facility will take four months to be completed.

The new Alabaster location of Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant & Bar marks the second to be announced to be coming to the county after a second Hoover location was announced in March 2023 for Tattersall Park near Publix. The first Hoover location opened its doors in 2020 and can be found at Stadium Trace.

Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant & Bar offers lunch and dinner as well as weekend brunch with a menu that features an array of options.

Appetizer highlights include chicken bacon ranch fries, boom boom shrimp, buffalo chicken dip and wantons, southwest egg rolls, nachos and more.

The business also offers different types of wings with several flavors and multiple salads and soups to choose from. The main menu is highlighted by seafood, steaks, ribs, pork chops, burgers, chicken, sandwiches, wraps, pastas and tacos.

The restaurant also offers a full bar with an array of different drinks, including margaritas, cocktails, fishbowls, beer, wine and whiskey.
