ONEONTA – The Cornerstone Christian Chargers started out the season with another emphatic two-way performance in a 62-14 win over the Lighthouse Home School Warriors on the road on Aug. 23.

Cornerstone started out the game with an early touchdown, but Lighthouse answered just past the midway point in the opening quarter with a 1-yard punch-in touchdown run to tie the game at 8-8.

Less than a minute later, the Chargers got it done on the ground as well, securing a rushing touchdown and the ensuing two-point try to take a 16-8 lead that they would never relinquish.

From there, Cornerstone kept piling on the points in the first quarter. Zeke Adams launched an 80-yard pass to Noah Schober for a touchdown and ran in the conversion for the 24-8 lead.

The Chargers defense then came up big with two pick-sixes, with Adams securing the second to add 12 more points to the lead and end the opening period with a commanding 36-8 lead.

Lighthouse then opted to try the ground game and was rewarded with a 58-yard rushing touchdown. Cornerstone stopped the two-point conversion to leave the score at 36-14.

Adams then added the final touchdown of the half off a 43-yard run, and the Chargers entered halftime with a 42-14 advantage.

Cornerstone didn’t settle for its large lead and added to it just a minute into the third quarter.

Drake Dunning took the ball in from 10 yards out for a rushing touchdown, and the two-point try made the score 50-14.

That proved to be all for the Chargers offense, but the defense still had a pair of emphatic statements to make in the form of two more touchdowns.

Midway through the third quarter, Adams secured another interception and returned it 65 yards to the house for six more points and a 56-14 lead ahead of the fourth quarter.

Then, in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, Cornerstone got an even bigger interception return. This time, the Chargers brought the ball back 92 yards to score and add the final six points to their 62-14 season-opening win.

With their lone non-region game behind them, Cornerstone will look to keep its now 12-game win streak in 8-man play alive as it embarks on AISA Class A play.

Cornerstone will travel to North River Christian in a battle of the Chargers to kick off region play on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
