    Elementary and middle schools in Shelby County ranked amongst best in state

    Several elementary and middle schools in Shelby County ranked amongst the best in the state according to the Niche.com school rankings.

    In Shelby County, there are 15 elementary schools ranked in the top 150 in the state and seven middle schools ranked in the top 150 in Alabama.

    Niche.com ranks schools based on several criteria, including Academics, Diversity and Teachers. Niche evaluates schools based on these categories and assigns grades in each category.

    With the top score for elementary schools in the county, Alabaster City Schools’ Meadow View Elementary ranked No. 27 in Best Public Elementary Schools in Alabama.

    MVES scored an overall Niche grade of A due to an A in Academics, an A in Diversity and an A-plus in Teachers. At MVES, 944 students attend pre-K through third grade with a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1.

    The next best elementary school in the county, Calera Elementary School, placed No. 35 in Best Public Elementary Schools in the state.

    With an overall Niche grade of A, CES scored an A in Academics, an A in Diversity and an A in Teachers. At CES, 752 students attend kindergarten through second grade with a student teachers ratio of 17 to 1. According to Niche.com, state test scores indicate that 82 percent of students are proficient in math and 87 percent are proficient in reading.

    Creek View Elementary is the third best elementary school in the county and occupies the No. 45 spot in Best Public Elementary Schools in Alabama.

    CVES scored an overall Niche grade of A with an A in Academics, an A in Diversity and an A-minus in Teachers. With 946 students attending pre-K through third grade and a 16 to 1 student-teacher ratio, Niche.com reported that 64 percent of students are proficient in math and 70 percent are proficient in reading.

    As for middle schools, Oak Mountain Middle School is the highest ranking middle school in Shelby County and ranks No. 27 in Best Public Middle Schools in Alabama.

    With an overall Niche grade of A, OMMS earned an A in Academics, a B-plus in Diversity and an A in Teachers. With 1,175 students in sixth through eighth grade, the school has a student-teacher ratio of 21 to 1. According to Niche.com, state test scores indicate that 42 percent of students are proficient in math and 74 percent are proficient in reading.

    Thompson Middle School is the second highest ranked middle school in Shelby County, ranked in the No. 32 spot in the Best Public Middle Schools in Alabama.

    TMS earned an overall Niche grade of A-minus, with an A-minus in Academics, an A in Diversity and an A in Teachers. At TMS, 1,434 students are in enrolled in sixth through eighth grade with a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. Niche.com reports that 23 percent of students are proficient in math and 60 percent are proficient in reading.

    As the third best middle school in Shelby County, Pelham Park Middle School is ranked as the No. 38 in the Best Public Middle Schools in Alabama.

    With an overall Niche grade of A-minus, Pelham scored an A-minus in Academics, an A in Diversity and an A in Teachers. With 810 students in sixth through eighth grade, PPMS has a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. According to Niche.com, state test scores indicate that 24 percent of students are proficient in math and 60 percent are proficient in reading.

    -No. 63, Mt. Laurel Elementary School, SCS

    -No. 87, Thompson Intermediate School, ACS

    -No. 89, Chelsea Park Elementary School, SCS

    -No. 104, Forest Oaks Elementary School, SCS

    -No. 118, Shelby Elementary School, SCS

    -No. 119, Pelham Oaks Elementary, PCS

    -No. 130, Wilsonville Elementary School, SCS

    -No. 139, Pelham Ridge Elementary School, PCS

    -No. 144, Helena Intermediate School, SCS
