The bard—or, more accurately, the historian of at least one famous beard—is Susannah Koerber, chief curator at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, which holds one of the country’s most important collections relating to Abraham Lincoln and his times. She reports that a precocious11-year-old girl from New York State named Grace Bedell had persuaded the future president into growing his iconic facial tuft. Bedell wrote to then-candidate Lincoln on Oct. 15, 1860: “I have got four brothers, and a part of them will vote for you anyway, and if you will let your whiskers grow, I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you. You would look a great deal better, for your face is so thin,” she implored with wisdom older than her years, then added, “All the ladies like whiskers, and they would tease their husbands to vote for you, and then you would be president.”
Carmel middle school girls on wrestling team eager to see sport grow
Ana Penquite figures she will have more company from girls in the wrestling room in the future. “It’s a fun sport, and there are not a lot of girls at my school that do it,” said Penquite, who will be an eighth-grader at Clay Middle School in August. “When they hear about it, they are surprised.”
Top Notch 4 H Club holds July meeting
Top Notch 4-H Club met at the Birchwood Training Center on July 14th, 2024. At this meeting 20 members were in attendance. The upcoming Skillathon dates were discussed, as well as completing project books. Members were informed about the sale, buyer letters, and Jr. fairboard applications. Advisors also shared information about online entries for shows. The next meeting will be on August 13th at 6PM in the Swine Barn.

Man sentenced to supervised probation for his role in road-rage fatality
SEYMOUR – A man was sentenced in his role in an August 2023 crash south of Seymour that led to the death of a Greenfield woman Thursday afternoon in Jackson Circuit Court. Austin Robert Cooper, who was 22 and a resident of Austin when the crash occurred and left Ashlea Albertson dead, will not serve prison time but will spend five years on supervised probation.
