“The best of America is Independence day,” the couple said. “What could be better? We love our country and it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate our freedom.”

The parade is a way for the community to come together.

“This is one of the biggest parades here,” Lucia Valentine said. “All year long so many organizations turn out and we celebrate all they do here in the eastern panhandle.”

The parade celebrates the spirit of giving in the community.

“People in Shepherdstown show up for everything,” Jan Hafer, with the local food bank, said.

Shepherdstown, being a college community, will be kind of sleepy these next few weeks until students return to the classroom in August.
