CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. ( DC News Now ) — Two candidates for the West Virginia Senate in the eastern panhandle have agreed to a series of debates preceding the November election.
Incumbent Republican Patricia Rucker and her Democrat challenger, John Doyle, will hold at least one debate in Shepherdstown, Jefferson County and one in Inwood, Berkeley County.
Jefferson County revisits era when schools were ‘separate but equal’ Each debate will be 90 minutes and will take questions from the audience. Both candidates want civility to mark their campaign.
“We would like to model for the constituency and also other legislators and campaigns how to have a civil discourse,” Rucker said.
Rucker was elected in 2016 and has been twice re-elected.
Doyle is a veteran of the state House of Delegates, in which he served multiple terms, with a break during the administration of former Gov. Bob Wise when he was budget director.
“What you’re going to see in these debates,” Doyle said. “Is differences of opinion discussed respectfully and in a friendly manner.”
