Ipswich provides relief for Boston’s overloaded immigrant support system
IPSWICH — From January to April, Bob Marley, spiced okra and chicken, and dancing feet enlivened the house of resident Glenn Gibbs. For 10 weeks, Gibbs hosted a family of Haitian immigrants. He said sharing his home with Farah, Israel, and their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Shinay, was a “wonderful experience.” For the young family, it was respite from Boston’s overcrowded shelters.
Massport greenlights development at former Edison plant
The plans call for 636 housing units, 1.7 square feet of office space, and retail space. The development of the 15.2-acre former Edison Power Station at 776 Summer St. in South Boston cleared another hurdle in June. That’s when the Massachusetts Port Authority agreed to change deed restrictions on the property in exchange for $12 million from the redeveloper, greenlighting the project.
With new $3 million grant, Boston wants to diversify public art
The grant will fund temporary public art installations, free public events at "The Embrace," and interactive arts experiences through a multi-year program. Public art in downtown Boston appears to tell one story: George Washington greets visitors in the Public Garden, four-term Mayor Kevin White walks alongside crowds at Faneuil Hall, and James Michael Curley stands a short distance away.
