USFS Issues Warning as Unattended Campfire Incidents Rise
The United States Forest Service (USFS) is urging the public to prioritize campfire safety amid a large number of abandoned campfires across USFS lands in Colorado. As of July 12, 139 abandoned or unattended campfires were reported to the Pueblo Interagency Dispatch Center. This dangerous trend in outdoor recreation is one of the leading causes of catastrophic wildfires. The 2024 Interlaken Fire in Leadville, Colo. was started from an abandoned campfire and went on to burn more than 700 acres of the Interlaken Historic District.
Credit Union of Colorado Foundation Awards $50,000 in College Scholarships
Credit Union of Colorado Foundation has announced the 2024 winners of its annual college scholarship program. The Foundation awarded ten students with a $5,000 annual scholarship totaling $50,000 in tuition assistance for the 2024/2025 school year. Fort Collins winner Ariella Maroni will use the scholarship to help pay for her college education at Duke University.

The July 21, 1921 Colorado Transcript described a house fire where a brave young girl saved her two baby brothers. On the previous Tuesday afternoon, Mr. and Mr. F.W. Briggs went out to pick berries, leaving their 11 year old daughter Leslie to watch her brothers. While they were gone, the roof of the kitchen shed caught fire. Leslie quickly carried the babies to the farthest corner of the yard, then tried to douse the flames by throwing water at the roof. Unable to extinguish the fire, she ran to the nearest telephone to call the fire department, then ran back to the house and began dragging out the family’s possessions.

Damage found on hospital helicopter after landing in Colorado backcountry
A Flight For Life medical helicopter was left where it landed Friday near St. Mary's Glacier after damage was found on its tail rotor. A post-landing inspection by the pilot found a bent strike tab at the end of the tail rotor blade. Strike tabs are thin pieces of metal along the framework of each main and tail rotor.
