SHERWOOD, Ark. – Organizers behind a ballot initiative looking to make alcohol sales possible in north Sherwood say they are close to hitting the goal for petition signatures.

The petition is aiming to overturn the town’s Grey Township Act that’s keeping them from selling alcohol.

Supporters say liquor sales will keep more business in Sherwood and will boost the economy.

Monica Treat is a lead contributor and advocate for Act 4 Sherwood and said after 75 years of being under the Grey Township Act, it’s time for a change.

“If you live in Sherwood and you’re wanting restaurants, you’re wanting more places to go, you’re wanting entertainment, this is the ticket, hands down,” Treat said.

Some people say they’re afraid that changes will bring too much traffic or crime to the area, but Treat said the community should be open to diversifying, adding that the petition is more than just having liquor sales.

“This is going to change the landscape of Sherwood,” Treat said.

She said bringing in a neighborhood grocery that sells alcohol will allow the Sherwood community to keep what’s profited while opening the doors for more businesses to flourish.

“The deadline for the petitions is September the 2nd so we have about 6 weeks left to get 800 signatures,” Treat said.

The group said they currently have 3,100 signatures but Treat said she’s confident more people will get on board in the coming weeks, and if all goes well, the town will see a huge increase in resources, something Corrie Wiley said will stop people from driving far out to get their favorite drinks.

“For the longest we had to drive to Little Rock, west Little Rock, to have a great meal to enjoy our friends to fellowship when we have the economics here,” Corrie said.

Organizers said it’s a change the Sherwood community has never seen, but one they could thrive from.
