Jennifer Hudson’s boyfriend, Common, cannot stop gushing about his experience while collaborating with the singer on his new song “A GOD (There Is).”

After dating several ladies over the years, Common hints that he may have found ‘the one’ in Jennifer Hudson.

Love is definitely in the air (and in the studio) for Common and Jennifer Hudson! The rapper recently released his new album, “The Auditorium Vol. 1,” with producer Pete Rock. However, one track features a surprise guest that has everyone buzzing. Jennifer Hudson, his girlfriend, provides the stunning vocals for the unexpected appearance on the song “A GOD (There Is).”

In an unusual move, the rapper and actor discussed his personal life with Hudson during his promotional tour for his new studio album The Auditorium, Vol. 1 (with Pete Rock), which included an interview with PEOPLE.

In the interview, Common discussed collaborating with the 42-year-old EGOT star and revealed that her special connection to Aretha Franklin landed her the job.

“I loved it because when I played it to musician friends, they were like, ‘Who is that singing?'” he says. “I’m like, ‘That’s Jennifer!’ It doesn’t sound like things you’ve heard from her before. I love that we were able to utilize her gifts in a new space. She brought it, man.”

According to Common, the initial ideas for A GOD (There Is) emerged while listening to a beat sample that he thought was sung by Aretha Franklin, but it turned out to be Valerie Simpson of the famed duo Ashford And Simpson.

“I told [Jennifer] who it was, and then we were discussing,” he recalls. “I was like, you know how the light bulb goes off? The light bulb went off. ‘Wait, that song makes me feel like Aretha. Jennifer played Aretha [in 2021’s Respect]. Jennifer, why don’t you sing on this?’ She’s like, ‘Oh man, I would love to sing on it.’ She was vibing to it.”

Common describes his new album as “a new sound” but “with the spirit and energy of what we loved [from past] generations.”

Before his relationship with Hudson, Common dated several high-profile women.
