Woman Says Her Therapist-Turned-Lover Threatened To Kill Her After She Attempted To End Relationship

A Houston-based therapist is facing serious felony charges after allegedly threatening to kill a patient-turned-girlfriend when she attempted to end their relationship .

The case raises significant concerns about ethical boundaries in the mental health profession .

The incident began in October 2023 when Jhyah Scales sought therapeutic services for her son and was referred to Thaddeus Tolbert.

After several months of therapy for her son, Tolbert suggested that Scales start her own sessions with him. During these sessions, Tolbert reportedly began making advances, sending “good morning” texts and requesting hugs. By March 2024 , their professional relationship had turned intimate.

However, just a month later, Scales uncovered a shocking truth: Tolbert was married and expecting a child with another woman .

Disturbed by this revelation , Scales decided to end the relationship and confronted Tolbert at his office. Instead of accepting the breakup , Tolbert allegedly pulled a gun on her, pinned her against a wall, and screamed at her not to leave him.

Fortunately, a knock at the door interrupted the confrontation , allowing Scales to escape. But the ordeal did not end there. Later that day, after picking up her son from school , Scales discovered Tolbert waiting at her home .

An altercation ensued, during which Tolbert allegedly choked and kissed Scales against her will , declaring that he would die before letting her leave him.

“He pulled out his gun, pointed it at my head , and hit me with it,” Scales recounted . “I was begging him to leave, but he said, ‘I’m going to kill you. I’m going to kill us both.’ I was really caught off guard . I didn’t think someone like this could be capable, because he is a mental health professional, because he’s a therapist, and because he is active in the community .”

Tolbert is now facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary .
