At 110 years old, Ruth Onley is living proof that faith and family can be key ingredients to a long, fulfilling life .

Born in 1914 in Weverton, Maryland , Onley’s remarkable journey has spanned over a century, rooted in her deep religious beliefs and a life dedicated to caring for her loved ones .

With her father living nearly to 105, longevity seems to run in her family, but Onley attributes her lasting health to two things: God’s plan and the unwavering support of her family.

Family and Faith: The Secrets to Longevity

Raised as one of ten siblings , Onley’s early life involved helping care for her family and working in homes of prominent Maryland families before starting a family of her own.

She married Robert Onley at 26 and became a mother of five, eventually becoming the matriarch of a large family with 15 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren, and even two great-great-great-grandchildren.

Onley credits her long life to the love and care she receives from her children , saying:

“It’s the way my children take care of me.” Her faith has also been a guiding force, with Onley humorously noting , “(God) told me my days were all numbered. But he didn’t tell me the number.”

A Life of Joy , Good Food , and Fun

Cooking has been one of Onley’s enduring passions . Every Sunday after church , she would prepare a soul food feast for family and neighbors , featuring dishes like fried chicken, peach cobbler, and macaroni and cheese.

Even in her later years, Onley’s culinary skills , including canning jams and pickles, remain fondly remembered by her family.

Despite her age , Onley’s zest for life remains strong.

She enjoys beating her grandchildren at card games , Scrabble, and Connect 4, and still spends her days crocheting and watching game shows .

Her diet includes wholesome meals, starting with oatmeal or whole-grain pancakes and finishing with sweet treats like root beer floats and banana splits.

    Faith as Her Guiding Light

Onley’s devotion to her faith has been a constant source of strength . After becoming a widow at 48, she never remarried, saying:

“Once your husband dies, the Lord becomes your husband.” Her favorite hymn, “Amazing Grace ,” reflects her gratitude for the life she’s led: “Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come. The Lord hath brought me safe thus far, and the Lord will lead me home .”

Ruth Onley’s life is a testament to the power of faith, family, and living each day with purpose and joy.
