The families of Breonna Taylor, Tyre Nichols, and Sonya Massey are demanding police reform and support for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act following a series of fatal encounters with law enforcement.

During a press conference at the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C., family members of the victims emphasized the need for accountability and justice.

Breonna Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, voiced her frustration:

“I am tired of begging for people to do the right thing. It’s bigger than Breonna. It’s all these women up here crying for their babies.”

Sonya Massey, who was killed in her Illinois home on July 6 by Deputy Sean Grayson, is the latest victim of police misconduct. Grayson has been indicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and official misconduct.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, first introduced in 2021, aims to ban chokeholds, no-knock warrants, and establish a national police conduct registry.

Despite passing the House twice, the bill has stalled in the Senate. The act was reintroduced in August following Massey’s death.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump urged lawmakers to act, stating:

“This legislation represents a significant step towards addressing systemic racism and ensuring accountability in law enforcement.”
