Tennis icon Serena Williams recently underwent surgery to remove a branchial cyst the size of a small grapefruit from her neck, sharing her experience to emphasize the importance of health and self-care.

Williams, who discovered the lump in May, initially chose to monitor the benign cyst, but opted for surgery when it continued to grow and posed a risk of infection.

Branchial cleft cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop in the neck and may require surgical removal if they enlarge or cause discomfort.

Despite her initial hesitation, Williams ultimately decided to follow her doctors’ advice. Now, post-surgery, she says she is feeling “grateful and fortunate” for her recovery.

In a TikTok video, Williams shared a glimpse of her post-surgery life, smiling as she went shopping with her daughter, Olympia, and reassuring fans that she’s on the mend.

“I still made it to American Girl with Olympia as promised. And yes, all is OK,” Williams said, blending her trademark resilience with a sense of normalcy.

Williams’ journey serves as a reminder that even the greatest athletes need to prioritize their well-being.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, who has always been open about her health challenges, continues to set an example by addressing her health issues head-on.

Her decision to step back from competitive tennis after the 2022 U.S. Open aligns with her ongoing focus on family and long-term wellness.

While Williams missed some major sporting announcements during her recovery, including Rafael Nadal’s retirement, her focus remains on her healing process.

“Health always comes first,” she wrote to her followers on social media.

The story of Williams’ cyst removal serves as an important reminder that self-care and proactive medical attention are crucial, no matter one’s accomplishments.
