Affleck moved on with Jennifer Lopez in 2021 while Garner started dating John Miller in 2018. By 2022, Affleck and Lopez were tying the knot — and Garner explained how she “had a wedding” for herself that same year. Here’s what she said.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck remained friends after their divorce. The couple fell in love shortly after Ben Affleck’s first breakup with Jennifer Lopez in 2004, and they tied the knot in 2005. Ten years later, the couple went their separate ways before making their split official. Garner and Affleck became committed co-parents to their three kids, and their separation never turned vicious.

Affleck moved on with Jennifer Lopez in 2021, and the couple married in 2022. Garner didn’t attend her ex-husband’s wedding. However, she explained to Town & Country how she had her own wedding that year to celebrate her 50th birthday.

“I basically had a wedding for myself,” she told the publication. “I was so shocked that I was doing it.”

Garner’s birthday fell on Easter that year (April 17), so she had her sisters and her parents over to celebrate the holiday and her birthday. She asked the other birthday attendees to help with the Blessings in a Backpack program by having guests fill 5,000 backpacks with food to feed a family of four.

She spoke to Extra about her big birthday involving family and friends. “My family has tickets to come out,” she explained, “my parents and my sisters, nieces, and nephews. I don’t know what we’ll do, but I can’t wait.”

Jennifer Garner never disparages her ex-husband, Ben Affleck, or his wife, Jennifer Lopez. In fact, she’s never even spoken about their beautiful wedding ceremony at Affleck’s Georgia estate. Affleck and Lopez likely didn’t invite Garner despite Affleck and Garner’s post-divorce friendship.

While speaking to Town & Country, Garner addressed how others view her as “nice,” especially because of how she treats her ex.

“I have no reason not to be nice,” she explained. “My life is lovely.” However, she then added, “I’m not always just nice. I can also be salty, and I can be taciturn, or I can be really serious about what I want to get done. It’s not that I feel I’m underestimated in that way — I’m not afraid to stand up for myself and say, ‘Just so you know, this isn’t going to fly with me.’ When that happens, I don’t want you to be shocked that I’m a real person.”

Jennifer Garner likely won’t invite Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez to her possible future wedding to John Miller. “It would be awkward to have Ben at the wedding because Jen would have to invite J.Lo,” an insider told Life & Style. “And Jen and John don’t want to invite any more publicity than necessary, they want no distractions. This is their special day. They’re much more low-key and want to keep their wedding private.”
