Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have been married for over 10 years. Before the popular couple tied the knot, Reynolds was romantically linked to Scarlett Johansson. Johansson and Reynolds married in September 2008 and separated two years later in December 2010.

So, what happened between Johansson and Reynolds that influenced their divorce? Neither actor spoke much about their split, though rumors suggested Reynolds allegedly may have cheated on Johansson with Lively. Lively met Reynolds when they worked on The Green Lantern in 2010. Lively ended her three-year relationship with Penn Badgley in October 2010, and Reynolds and Johansson announced their divorce later that same year. Lively and Johansson haven’t commented on the rumors. However, a source told Life & Style in January 2024 that the actors don’t want to spend time near each other.

“Scarlett and Blake do everything to avoid each other on NYC’s small social scene,” spills the source. “Since they both live in New York and attend similar events and red carpets for museums or charities, it’s a careful dance to make sure they are not at the same place.”

Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds haven’t opened up regarding what happened. However, while speaking on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop podcast in 2023, Johansson called Reynolds a “good guy.”

“You’ve been married two times?” Paltrow asked Johansson on the podcast.

“Three times,” Johansson answered.

“Oh, that’s right, because I forgot that you were married to Ryan Reynolds! Goals!” added Paltrow.

“Yes,” Johansson said. “We weren’t married very long, but we were when I first met you, for Iron Man or whatever.”

“We love a good Ryan Reynolds in our house,” Paltrow said, to which Johansson replied, “He’s a good guy.”

During the podcast, Johansson gave clues as to why her marriage to Reynolds may not have worked. She explained how she needed to identify the “fundamental things” she wanted in a partner.

“Obviously, it’s hard to be in a relationship anyway because you have to compromise all the time, and sometimes your lives separate and come back together,” she said. “I never realized, ‘Oh, it’s really important for me, I need to be with a compassionate person. That’s a fundamental characteristic that has to be there.’ … Understanding what those fundamental things are that you need in a partner is a must, I think — for longevity, anyway. I think identifying those things was a game-changer for me.”

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have a happy and healthy marriage. According to Reynolds, his relationship secret is that he and Lively are “genuinely rooting” for each other. Lively said that Reynolds calls her his “knight in shining armor.”

“My husband calls me his knight in shining armor, which I think is so sweet because we only hear about men being that,” she said, according to DailyMail.com.

Lively and Reynolds also promised not to work “at the same time” to “prioritize their personal lives.”
