In 2005, Affleck asked Garner to marry him. She was already pregnant with their first child, Violet, when they tied the knot in Turks & Caicos in June of the same year, welcoming their first child in December.

After the media spectacle surrounding his impending nuptials to Jennifer Lopez two years prior, the Affleck/ Garner wedding was low-key. Lopez and Affleck, set to wed in September 2003, called off their high-profile wedding days due to intense media intrusion.

Lopez and Affleck subsequently released a statement that read, per ABC News , “Due to the excessive media attention surrounding our wedding, we have decided to postpone the date. When we found ourselves seriously contemplating hiring three separate ‘decoy brides’ at three different locations, we realized that something was awry.”

Therefore, when Affleck and Garner tied the knot, they wanted to keep the moment between them. Neither of their parents were invited to the ceremony. Officiant and Garner’s Alias co-star Victor Garber and his partner Rainer were the only others present.

The event was steamy due to the intense heat. Garner, three months pregnant at the time, was reportedly feeling the temperature more intensely due to her pregnancy.

In a 2016 interview with Vanity Fair , Jennifer Garner opened up about her and Ben Affleck ‘s elopement. She shared intimate details of their wedding with the outlet.

“I didn’t marry the big fat movie star; I married him, ” she says. “And I would go back and remake that decision. I ran down the beach to him, and I would again.”

She continued, “You can’t have these three babies and so much of what we had. He’s the love of my life. What am I going to do about that ? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, charismatic, and generous. He’s just a complicated guy.”

Garner concluded, “I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”

The couple announced their separation just weeks after their 10th wedding anniversary in 2015. Their divorce was finalized in October 2018.

Affleck once told Parade that co-parenting after divorce took some getting used to. “The hardest and most painful thing that’s ever happened to me in my life was divorce. I didn’t understand quite what that would be, especially with kids.”

Their arrangement today gives Affleck the kids three days a week, so he says he piles his work commitments on the other four so he can be fully present. “It’s just the joy of my life to spend time with them,” he says.
