Everything Kate Middleton’s Said About Her Cancer Journey as Chemotherapy Ends

'The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family,' Kate Middleton said of her cancer journey as she announced she's done with treatment.

Kate Middleton is done with chemotherapy treatment after a “tough” year. The Princess of Wales, 41, announced in a video posted to social media that her treatment is done. Ahead, see everything she’s said—in her own words—from first learning of her diagnosis and telling her and Prince William’s three children to gaining a “new perspective on everything.”

Kate’s cancer journey: diagnosis a ‘huge shock’

After undergoing surgery in January 2024, months out of the public eye, and much speculation surrounding her health, Kate revealed on March 22, 2024, that she’d been diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer.

In a two-minute video, the future queen, sitting on a bench on castle grounds, shared her diagnosis had come as a “huge shock.” She went on to share that she’d already begun “early stages” of preventative chemotherapy while she and her husband, Prince William, the Prince of Wales, explained the situation to Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6, privately.

“It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment,” Kate explained. “But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.”

Kate went on to say she—and William and their kids—“now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment.”

Kate’s cancer journey: June update on ‘good and bad days’

Just under three months later, on June 14, 2024, Kate issued an update on her condition. In a statement posted to Instagram alongside a portrait of her leaning against a tree, the 42–year–old shared she had both “good days and bad days” as her treatment continued.

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days, you feel weak, tired, and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

Kate also revealed her plans to attend Trooping the Colour in London, England, the following day. However, she also noted she was “not out of the woods yet.” A month later, on July 14, 2024, she handed out trophies at Wimbledon. It was her last public appearance of the summer.

Kate’s cancer journey: done with chemo as ‘path to healing and full recovery is long’

On Sept. 9, 2024, Kate released a video expressing her “relief” after completing her chemotherapy treatment. Filmed by Will Warr, it showed Kate spending time with William, George, Charlotte, and Louis as she read her statement in a voiceover. Subsequent footage showed the Wales kids, along with Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton, playing cards.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family,” she said. She continued, saying while “complex, scary, and unpredictable,” the cancer journey “brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before. And with that, a new perspective on everything.”

“This time has, above all, reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted,” she added. “Of simply loving and being loved.”

Kate shared that her “focus” is now “stay[ing] cancer free.” Despite completing treatment, her “path to healing and full recovery is long. And I must continue to take each day as it comes.”

She also said she’s looking forward to “more public engagements in the coming months when I can” as she moves ahead with a “renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.”

At the time of writing, Kensington Palace hasn’t issued a date for Kate’s return to royal duties.
