Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle , share two young children: Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3. Since moving to the United States, the two have focused on being hands-on parents; they even pick their kids up from school each day.

Harry’s upbringing was much different than the one he is trying to give his kids, and one royal expert says the prince’s relationship with his little family gives him the “security” he didn’t always have as a child.

Harry and Meghan wed in 2018 and announced their first pregnancy five months later. The couple welcomed their son, Prince Archie Harrison, in May 2019, about one year after they wed. Less than a year later, Harry and Meghan relocated to California with the hopes of living a life more on their own terms and less by the rules of the royal family. The family of three later welcomed their second addition, Princess Lilibet Diana, in 2021. Harry recently gushed about how much he loves his kids in a statement prior to his 40th birthday, and one expert says Harry’s immediate family gives him the security blanket he didn’t have as a child.

“I think he finds the security and anchor in his little family that was sadly missing in his own broken childhood home,” royal expert Jennie Bond told OK! Magazine . “I think he is relishing his role as a parent and playing the fullest part he can in the lives of his two tots.”

Bond also added that Harry was so young when he saw his parents’ own “marital difficulties” and has always been “determined” to ensure his own two children always see a loving family.

Harry has continued to put his family first in recent years, and that is a large part of the reason why the prince has not returned to the United Kingdom. The prince has cited security issues as being his main concern, and he’s said in the past that he refuses to allow his wife or kids to be put at any risk.

Harry did go to court over his security being stripped, but he lost the case. He has since appealed, though it’s unclear what that outcome could be. These days, Harry and Meghan are giving their children the most private life possible to help avoid the same upbringing that Harry had in the spotlight.
