King Charles struck up a friendship with Nancy Reagan in the early 1970s. They corresponded via letters for years until she died in 1996. In one note, Charles spoke of his marriage to Princess Diana. Opening up to the first lady, he called his relationship with Diana a “Greek tragedy.”

King Charles trusted Nancy Reagan enough to share his innermost thoughts about marriage to Princess Diana

For over four decades, King Charles corresponded with Nancy Reagan. His letters were made public after being donated to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library, in California.

Per Express , Charles discussed his relationship with Princess Diana with his longtime friend. He wrote, “No one can really understand what it all means until it happens to you, which is why it all keeps getting worse and worse.”

Charles added, “One day I will tell you the whole story . It is a kind of Greek tragedy and would certainly make a very good play!”

Former President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan ‘valued’ their friendship with Charles

With a friendship that spanned decades, former United States President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy Reagan, ‘valued’ their relationship with King Charles. They shared their lives, as friends do, and appeared to be there for one another when each needed support.

Joanne Drake of the Reagan Presidential Foundation told the Daily Mail , “President and Mrs. Reagan really valued their friendship with the royal family, especially the Prince of Wales . They shared the ups and downs of their lives and always wrote the other with strong words of personal support, especially if the situation had become public.”

In a letter written to Mrs. Reagan after the former president died in 2004, Charles expressed his sincere condolences. “I so wanted to write to say how much my heart goes out to you,” he wrote.

“I have minded so much for you ever since your husband became ill with that beastly Alzheimer’s as I can well imagine how soul-destroying it must be to be unable to do anything to help as the illness gradually drags your loved one into a separate world from which you are barred.”
