Two royals received tough news about their health earlier this year as both King Charles and the Princess of Wales ( formerly as known as Kate Middleton ) were diagnosed with cancer and began chemotherapy.

But they weren’t the only royals to hear they had cancer this year. Prince Andrew ‘s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. She underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery and then around the same time the king and Kate were hospitalized in early 2024, the Duchess of York was given the news that she had malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

Since then, Sarah has been on a mission reminding others not to skip their screenings and medical appointments. Fergie was also asked how the Princess of Wales has been doing lately. Here’s what the duchess said about that and where Kate was just spotted.

After her own experiences, Sarah has been spreading the word about the importance of medical checkups. On Oct. 10, she appeared on the British talk show This Morning and opened up about her health.

“The worst thing is the fear of your own mind’ and when you actually get to it, I can say that, I went through thinking [that was] my demise,” she explained (per Gloucestershire Live ). “I thought, ‘That’s it’ and that’s your mind. So, that’s why I’m talking about it and that’s why I’m talking about nature, and I’m talking about everything because come on, we’ve got to talk about it.”

She added that her cancer was detected during her checkups and catching it then saved her life.

While discussing her diagnosis the host said: “I think the other thing Sarah that has been really tangible is seeing Princess Kate going through what she’s going through and seeing her being so public, and the king of course.”

Sarah was then asked how Kate is doing now to which the duchess replied: “She’s just showing the world what it is to really look after yourself and self-love in order to help others, I think that’s extraordinary what she’s doing!”

Kate steps out with Prince William for first engagement since completing chemotherapy

On Sept. 9, Kate announced in an emotional video that she had completed her chemotherapy and would be returning to her public engagements soon. On Oct. 10, she made a surprise in-person appearance with Prince William in Southport, England, her first since sharing that is now “cancer-free.”

Sarah commented on how Kate revealed the news about finishing up her treatment with everyone, saying: “The video that the princess did was just incredible. I mean, I was so moved.”

As for Sarah’s message to the public about cancer screenings, she wanted people to know: “If anyone is sitting at the end of the bed saying, ‘No I can’t possibly go [for a screening] because it might be bad news’ — it’s not bad news. Go anyway because there will be a solution anyway … Even if it’s really frightening, there will be solutions.”
