In judging the Siberian Husky, the first thing to remember is his job: carrying a light load at a moderate speed over great distances in a very cold climate. The essence of breed type for the Siberian includes all of the characteristics required of an athletic, endurance sled dog. Standing back to form that initial impression of the dog, the judge should be asking if the length of the dog is slightly longer than the dog is tall; if there is slightly more daylight under the dog than the apparent depth of the body; if the dog has well laid-back shoulders and matching angles in the rear; if the neck is well arched and of sufficient length; if the topline is strong and level; if there is a slope to the croup and a well set-on tail; if the head is in balance and pleasing; if the coat does not obscure the outline of the dog.

In dogs with a dark mask the expression appears more stern, but never ill-natured.” Our breed is currently presenting the following types in the ring: “Strong and Powerful with Substance,” “Cute and Cuddly,” “Overdone Caricature,” and from time to time, you will see a “Collie” type. If you categorize the dogs into these four types when you first look at it, the cuts will become very clear. Your initial impression when looking at our breed should be “Strong and Powerful with Substance.” The word Powerful is used in our standard many times.

Once the class lines up, the silhouette of the breed is vital to the correct Leonberger type. Several elements are highlighted in the general appearance section of the standard. Let’s examine these elements one-by-one.

Their ancestry, use and structure are quite different from the long-legged terriers of Great Britain. Recent DNA testing suggests they are instead most closely related to the early hunting and herding dogs of Continental Europe. Historically a common farm dog in Southern Germany, Schnauzers herded livestock, dispatched vermin in the stable, and guarded property. They followed and guarded peddler’s wagons across the back roads of Europe and during World War I served as dispatch carriers for the Red Cross and as guard dogs for the German Army.

The Shih Tzu is a “big dog in a little package.” In the United States, where the breed standard calls for a weight of 9 to 16 pounds, the Shih Tzu is classified as a toy breed, but in many other countries, it is in the Non-Sporting or Utility group. Whatever its size, a proper Shih Tzu should be sturdy and well-boned. If you pick it up, it is likely to be deceptively heavy for its size, with heavy bones, good spring of rib, and a broad, deep chest. From what we know of the breed’s history, it has always been thus. There is no evidence of a so-called “imperial gene,” and breed historian Victor Joris states that the breed in the royal court was similar in size to what is called for in today’s breed standards. Although the origin of the Shih Tzu is shrouded in mystery, it is probably mostly of Tibetan origin. Along with such breeds as the Lhasa Apso, Tibetan Terrier, and Tibetan Spaniel, it is one of a group of small, shaggy Oriental breeds classified as “lion dogs” and considered sacred in Buddhism.

Sandy Paws Rescue Inc., a foster-based rescue in Massachusetts, is still looking for a forever home for an adorable six-year-old French bulldog named Joannie.
